At-Home Self-Care

Since we’ve all been put in a position where we’re spending more time at home, what better time to try out some self care.  This can look different for everyone, whether you want to meditate and journal or throw on a facemask and unwind with a good book. In these strange times of isolation and anxiety, it’s important to look after your mental health whenever you get the chance! Let’s talk about a couple of great ways to do some self-care at home.

Limit your news and social media intake.

With a lot more time on your hands, it may be tempting to scroll aimlessly through your feed. Also, constantly checking the news can be hard on your mind since there’s little positivity broadcast to the world right now. As good as it is to be informed and to stay in touch, take a certain amount of time each day to detox from it. Obviously, there’s no way to totally avoid these outlets but try to be aware of your intake and how it affects you.

Get outside

According to Mercy Medical Center, 42% of Americans are Vitamin D deficient. Self care includes not only working on yourself externally but also internally! Going out for a socially distant walk is a great way to get a healthy dose of vitamin D and to get your body moving. Being inside all day every day starts to take its toll on you and getting outside for a walk or trying to work outside can be a great solution for your cabin fever.

Keep a gratitude journal.

Opening a blank journal and pouring your thoughts out can feel a little intimidating to those who have never done it before. That’s why gratitude journals are an excellent way to jot down your thoughts but with some guidance. When the current state of things can feel a bit heavy and sad, it is important to remember all the good in your life that you have to be grateful for.

Do that face mask.

When most people say “self-care” it might be their way of saying “skincare”. Putting on a face mask, following a skin care routine, and managing breakouts or dry skin requires some effort. Since you’re putting the time in to take care of your skin, be smart about the products you choose. Seek out skin care without toxins and chemicals that aren’t good for your body. Consider more natural versions of your deodorant, toothpaste, soap, and other daily products as a small way to thank your body for everything it does.

These are only a handful of ways you can treat yo’ self while you’re spending some extra time at home. Take this time to find things that work for you and make an effort to do them often. Self-care is not a one and done type of thing. Pay attention to what you need and do it, you owe it to yourself!
